How does it work?

Baby under 18 months

What is mother afraid of?
What any mother is afraid of, no matter where she comes from:
  • Chilling fear for the baby’s life and health: “Suddenly, something terrible will happen, and it is out of my control”;
  • Fear that the baby will fall ill;
  • Fear that the baby often cries;
  • Fear of ignorance: 'What happens to my baby? Does he/she feel bad? In pain or in fear?'.
Why is the baby crying?

All babies cry. It is rather challenging to comprehend the reason behind the cries of a child which recently learned to speak. Therefore, it is especially complicated to understand why a newborn is tearful. After all, the ways of communication familiar to us are still inaccessible to the baby, and he/she is also unable to cope independently with his/her own minor troubles.

The main causes of crying for a newborn are associated with the most important needs and issues: hunger, pain, fear, thirst, discomfort, hypothermia or overheating, overwork or a desire to communicate. This is a common reaction to the world around the baby.

But what if he/she has some kind of health issue?

How to find out quickly and directly from home?

Now there is Guarders®!

Guarders® warns the doctor about threats to the health of the baby. This is a reliable and valid tool for preliminary diagnostics, which gives additional confidence in the proper monitoring of the health and development of your baby.

Guarders® saves time and money for parents, state and insurance companies.

Any disease is easier to prevent than to cure!

Dangerous symptoms and conditions of the newborn

What is it?

High temperature (fever) is an increase in body temperature to more than 38 ºС if the measurement is done rectally. And more than 37.5 ºС, if the measurement is done axillary (thermometer is placed in the armpit).

Action guide for parents:
  • undress the child then wait for 15 minutes before measuring temperature;
  • if the fever persists, do the urinalysis using the Guarders® MiniLab® kit, in case of abnormalities, contact your doctor through the Guarders® Baby Pass® app;
  • with a significant increase in temperature, it is very important to increase the natural heat transfer of the body. To do this, you need:
    • get the baby dressed in accordance with the air temperature;
    • give plenty of water to the baby;
    • cool and moisten the room;
    • you can wrap a towel with cold water in a towel and put it near the baby’s head, but at a distance of at least 5 centimeters;
  • If changes in the urine are detected using the Guarders® method (pay special attention to the ketone and nitrite values in the urine), you should immediately consult a doctor;
  • Data analysis and examination of the child will help to understand the cause of the fever and quickly prescribe treatment;
  • If a child with a fever has any rashes on the skin, you should immediately consult a doctor;
  • Antipyretics must be given as directed by a doctor! If the temperature remains high, you must call an ambulance.
Breathing difficulty

How to understand that the newborn is having issues with breathing?

There is a retraction along the edge of the costal arch when the child is inhaled (the child seems to strongly draw in his stomach when breathing).

Any difficulty signs of breathing complications can be a life-threatening symptom, especially during the first year of a children’s life!
Action guide for parents:
  • Calm the baby, hold it in your hands, put it on your chest or let it drink from a bottle;
  • It is extremely important to humidify the air in the room. Make sure that the air in the baby’s bedroom is cool at night;
  • You can quickly increase air humidity with the help of vapors coming from a hot shower or with a humidifier. To quickly moisten the baby's larynx, you can also use inhalations through a nebulizer; Take your baby to the doctor immediately if you notice signs of difficulty in breathing, especially if his breathing is groaning or you hear wheezing or high-pitched whistling sound while breathing, even at a distance.
Refusal to drink and/or vomiting, diarrhea

Additionally, the baby can sometimes experience a lack of energy and even drowsiness. It can also be difficult to establish eye contact with the him/her (some pediatricians say about such patients “the baby looks inward”)

Action guide for parents:
  • do a urinalysis using Guarders® MiniLab® kit, pay particular attention to the ketones and the level of pH;
  • immediately contact your doctor through Guarders® Baby Pass® app; When the level of ketones deviates from the norm:
  • liquefied stool can be noticed. It is not a severe issue if this happens only once. If you observe it more often 3 times a day or if blood appears in the stool - this is a reason to contact a professional, especially if you notice the first signs of dehydration:
    • a decrease in the frequency and volume of urination. If your baby has not urinated in the past 5 hours - immediately consult a doctor!
    • dry skin and mucous membranes: there are less tears, saliva, the skin has become dry and unusually flabby;
    • thirst.
'Dangerous' coughing

What is it?

Coughing is a protective reaction of the body. With the help of a cough, the respiratory system is cleansed of excess secretion and microbes.

Coughing is a fairly common symptom among children. Due to the fact that it seems to be a common and “understandable” sign of an illness, parents often miss the moment of a timely visit to a doctor.

Coughing can be caused not only by problems with organs of the respiratory system, it can also signal a malfunction in the cardiovascular or digestive system. Even a sulfuric plug in the ear be the reason behind it. The symptom will not disappear until the cause is eliminated!

How to understand that your baby’s coughing is unhealthy?
  • cough at any time up to 6 months;
  • the baby coughs during the night;
  • the baby coughs repeatedly until vomiting;
  • coughing does not stop for more than 3 weeks;
  • cough of a 'barking' nature. It is often accompanied by hoarseness and noisy breathing.
Action guide for parents:

When you notice symptoms of an ‘’unhealthy cough’’ - immediately bring your child to the doctor!

Pain is always a symptom of alarm with which the human body signals a sort of danger. An intense and growing pain symptom is always an occasion to consult a specialist. Remember that a child’s “teething” could be the cause of the child’s moodiness and irritability, but in the vast majority of cases it does not cause a temperature increase above 37.5 *C (99,5 °F) or severe pain.

How to understand that the baby is in pain?
  • baby cries without calming down;
  • overly excited without a specific reason;
  • anxiety and unrest;
How to understand that the baby is in pain?
  • do not write off teething symptoms that appear;
  • use the Guarders® system to do a urinalysis before you see a doctor;
  • contact your doctor through the Guarders® Baby Pass® app to evaluate the general condition of the baby and interpret the result of a urinalysis;
  • The doctor will assess the need for a visit to the hospital.
What is it?

Seizure – these are chaotic, mostly painful contractions of various muscle groups. There are many causes for seizures. Short-term generalized tonic-clonic febrile convulsions are the most frequent in children. As a rule, they occur in normally developing children aged 6 months to 3-5 years (mainly from 1 to 2 years) during a rise in body temperature without signs of toxic or infectious brain damage.

Action guide for parents:
  • it is necessary to lay the child on a flat surface, try to protect it from foreign objects, since, by making chaotic movements with his hands and feet, the baby can injure himself;
  • open a window. It is necessary for the baby to provide oxygen access; therefore, you should not get to close to him/her.
  • if the baby has a tight collar, the upper buttons must be unfastened. Do not try to insert foreign objects into the baby's mouth, especially sharp ones, as this can lead to serious injury;
  • it is necessary to initiate breathing reflexes by patting the baby on the cheeks, putting cold water on his face, and let him breathe in ammonia from a distance of 10 to15 cm;
  • after carrying out these measures, you must urgently consult a doctor who can develop specific recommendations for its treatment based on the type of seizures and the causes of their occurrence.

Why is it important?

The first two years of life are the most amazing, the most difficult, the most important and the most unusual period for both the baby and his parents.

It is at this time that a rapid development of all body systems takes place. The baby turns from a helpless being into a baby standing confidently on its two legs.

Now the attention of doctors from around the world is focused on this stage of physical development.

The lack of communication between doctors and the patient has always existed. But this problem is especially relevant for children of the first years of life.

They cannot tell what bothers them or why they feel bad. Parents do not understand what exactly is happening with their baby and cannot tell the doctor about it.

What follows then?
  • Untimely diagnosis, which leads to untimely provision of medical care;
  • Parents incorrectly self-medicate their children instead of going to the doctor;
  • Untimely, incomplete or incorrect provision of information to the doctor;
  • Dissatisfaction of parents with the lack of proper consultation of their children with a doctor.

What kind of information does a urinalysis give you?

Early diagnosis of urine is important for the timely detection of urinary tract infections (UTI), kidney diseases, diabetes, metabolic disorders and other diseases.

When is a urinalysis indicated for children from 0-2 years old?
  • urine testing is a compulsory test in the conditions of assistance for children with fever, both in emergency conditions and at home;
  • a urine test helps to identify infections of the urinary system that have an asymptomatic course in the early stages, or in the presence of a single complaint - an increase in the body temperature of the baby;
  • urinalysis is a means of monitoring the recovery of children who have already had an infection of the urinary system (within 3 years after infection);
  • a urine test reveals in the early stages of metabolic disorders in babies, which can subsequently lead to the development of diabetes;
  • urine tests for acute respiratory viral infections, which are accompanied by a fever, to help exclude problems with the urinary system (which can be combined with acute respiratory viral infections) and acetonemic syndrome (which very often accompanies acute respiratory viral infections in children under 2 years old);
  • urine tests with control of pH, glucose, ketone bodies help to adjust the baby’s diet and track the reaction to the introduction of complementary foods, avoiding the breakdown of the baby’s adaptive mechanisms.

Accurate and timely diagnosis is important to prevent complications of the disease or its transition to the chronic process.

Guarders® solves the problem of collecting urine and greatly improves the speed of the analysis. Get results within 60 seconds!

Guarders® MiniLab® Cautionary device kitGuarders® MiniLab® BenefitsGuarders® MiniLab® - how it worksWhat indicators are determined by the Guarders® method and what do they mean?

Notes for the mother

Using the Guarders® method, you can quickly and painlessly identify the 8 most important components of urine.

The presence of red blood cell in the urine is called hematuria. Red blood cells are normally absent in the urine. Hematuria is visually visible (macrohematuria), when urine turns red and invisible (microhematuria), when red blood cells can be determined only using diagnostic laboratory methods. For children, an infection of the lower urinary tract can lead to the formation of red blood cells in the urine, but the formation of red blood cells can also be associated with other kidney diseases. Sometimes hematuria can be caused by extrarenal causes, such as, for example, acute vitamin C deficiency, hemorrhagic diathesis, or the use of certain medications.

Urine specific gravity testing is a painless way for a doctor to check how your baby’s kidneys function and dilute urine. The second name for specific gravity is the relative density of urine. Urine density is affected by the amount of urine excreted. The more urine a child releases, the lower the relative density of urine. The specific gravity decreases with kidney diseases and with the use of a large amount of fluid and increases with severe fluid loss (diarrhea, vomiting), diabetes, high fever.

Cells of the immune system - white blood cells - increase in the urine when the body fights the infection. The presence of white blood cells in the urine of the child, if he is healthy, absent or may be small. With pathology, the number of leukocytes in the urine increases. The presence of white blood cells in the urine is called white blood cell count. An increase in white blood cells in a child’s urine indicates inflammation in the kidneys, bladder, ureters, or genitals.

Protein in the urine is one of the most important laboratory indicators of kidney function. The presence of protein in the urine is called proteinuria. Protein is usually absent in urine. The detection of protein in the urine may indicate acute and chronic kidney diseases, inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract. If you receive a result with a deviation from the norm, you must immediately consult a doctor.

Healthy children have sterile urinary system. Detection of nitrites in the urine indicates that a bacterial infection is present in the urinary tract. Usually, this is called a urinary tract infection. Unlike leukocytes, which can also indicate inflammation in the genital area, nitrites are formed by conversion from nitrates under the influence of mainly specific microorganisms that cause infections of the urinary system. Therefore, the detection of nitrites in the urine always requires the advice of a doctor.

The formation of ketones is associated with the breakdown of fat by the body to generate energy instead of glucose. Ketones, normally, are not found in urine. What can the result of a urinalysis with a deviation from the norm mean? Obtaining an abnormal result can characterize an unbalanced diet, a diet low in carbohydrates, excessive intake of fats and proteins, diabetes, immune disorders or liver diseases. For example, an excess of meat complementary foods with a relative lack of cereals can also lead to the production of ketone bodies. It should also be remembered that for children the ability to digest fats is reduced, so an acetonemic attack can occur after one meal with a high fat content.

The presence of glucose in the urine is called glycosuria. Glucose is usually absent in urine. If the presence of glucose is detected, further studies are needed. What can the result of a urinalysis with a deviation from the norm mean? Obtaining a result with a deviation from the norm may be associated with an increased intake of carbohydrates or serve as a sign of diabetes, kidney and infectious diseases. Glucose can also appear in the urine due to side effects of medicine or poisoning.

The acidity of urine, which is judged by the pH value, is closely related to the state of acid-base balance. Typically, the pH of urine ranges from 5.0 to 7.0 and depends on the age of the child and the type of food. For example, the introduction and predominance of vegetable complementary foods and fruits makes the urine reaction more alkaline, the predominance of meat and sour milk supplements makes the urine reaction more acidic. Urine pH may vary depending on diet, fluid intake, and current health status. In inflammatory diseases of the bladder, urine can be alkaline due to enzymatic processes. If you receive a urine result with a deviation in pH from the norm, you should inform your doctor and, with the exception of diseases, keep the pH under control as a marker of your baby’s reaction to nutrition.
